So what is this “will of God” I so often hear various people talk about. Well it seems to me that this term is frequently miss used, abused and miss applied in all aspects of our lives and society. I say this because many have used this phrase to justify any manner of actions or to excuse them selves from responsibility for their actions.
So here is my break down of the meaning of the “will of God” from a biblical perspective. (well at least as best as I understand it.)
First, the bible with the exception of some very select individuals says nearly nothing about a specific will of God for an individuals life. That is to say that there is no biblical basis for the notion of a specific plan for your live laid out by God and that deviation from that plan leads to some sort of hardship. Although there are some who in history were given very specific direction, every one else was left to a much more general notion of Gods will for their life.
Second, the bible does however provide a great deal of information on Gods will for humanity as a whole and that of a matter of course applies to each and every individual. Gods will is simply that every one would come to a saving faith in the Son and that each would live a life of goodness and charity towards each other. Truly there is very little beyond that. Look it up!
Thirdly, there is the matter of Gods will for nations and the future of the earth as a whole. All I can say here is that God only knows what the renewal of all creation will be like. And the bible is quite clear that the nations are organizations by humans for humans and though God allows some to rise and other to fall he is not the direct author of any modern nations on earth today. As a Christian we have a responsibility to act from our faith in all matters in business and civic duty but we should never expect that a nation is in specific favor over any other beyond that of the faith of its leaders.
So in summary the will of God for my life is simply “Live your faith, do good in all you do”. (Truthfully that is a much simpler statement then our fallen natures will often allow us to truly live.)
So there is how I see it.
